Isabel Fernandes – Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal)

After decades of neglect and even attack, close reading – “the signature method of Narrative Medicine” (Charon et al 2017) – has undergone a revival of interest (Lentricchia and Dubois 2003) and has shown again its didactic, dialogical and cohesive capacities, in the field of the “New Humanities” and, more specifically, in Narrative Medicine. The aim of this talk is to revisit close reading as a particularly productive reading and writing practice and to illustrate its practical and epistemological potential, especially when dealing with health care issues.

Isabel Fernandes is Professor of English at the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and Scientific Coordinator of the interdisciplinary and international project in Medical Humanities, and PI of the FCT funded project SHARE – Health and Humanities Acting Together. She has published extensively on several British writers and has authored and co/edited: Critical Dialogues: Slow Readings of English Literary Texts (2011), Literatura: a (in)disciplina na intersecção dos saberes e das artes (2011), Contar (com) a Medicina (2015, 2016 e 2018), Creative Dialogues: Narrative and Medicine (2015) and Entrecruzares Bioéticos (2020).
