Youth and audiovisual culture in post-digital times

Until recently talking about “digital” referred us to the future and innovation. In recent times, the digital revolution has turned into digital normality. Many of the “new technologies” have ceased to be so to be integrated into daily routines. This is what has allowed the concept of the “post-digital” to be specified. As social networks and ICTs are integrated into everyday life, digital is no longer something unusual and becomes a strategy of the real. We should not consider that we are close to the end of digital, but that this term has transformed its sense of novelty, to become more familiar and common; that is to say, a type of zeitgeist or spirit of the time. For example, computers have been with us for more than three decades, but today we carry and use one of these devices almost daily.

Visual culture, for its part, which aims to study the importance of the image, in contemporary societies, and its relationship with the viewer, has a lot to say about the post-digital, already as a central theme of the 7th International Conference of Visual Culture, in its virtual version. This way, in this new academic meeting, the humanization of digital technologies will be evaluated by;

  • the interaction between digital, biological, and cultural systems,
  • the relationship between cyberspace and real space,
  • the functionality of mixed or hybrid reality,
  • the management of social and physical communication,
  • the use of big data,
  • the use of virtual and augmented reality,
  • the counterpoints between localities and globalization, studies of digital ethnography and community narrative.

The digital world has its greatest development in emerging generations. This conference also reflects on how the values ​​and the affiliation with technologies influence young people and the changing perspectives thereof.

Prof. Luis Mañas Viniegra, PhD – Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain)

Luis Mañas Viniegra is professor and researcher in the Department of Applied Communication Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid. Doctor in Audiovisual Communication and Advertising from the Complutense University of Madrid, he has a degree in Journalism (UCM) and Advertising and Public Relations (UOC), as well as a Master’s Degree in Marketing Management (ESIC), among other postgraduate courses. He has been a professor at the Carlos III University of Madrid, Rey Juan Carlos University and the University of Valladolid, as well as a Master’s degree professor at the Open University of Catalonia and the International University of La Rioja. She is a member of the Complutense research group on Brand Management and Communication Processes and, currently, IP of the Innovation Project “Visual map of professional orientation for the Degree in Advertising and Public Relations”. Before joining the University, he has been Director of advertising agency and Director of Marketing and Communication in several companies.

Natalia Abuin

Prof. Natalia Abuín Vences – Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain)

Natalia Abuín Vences is a professor of Culture of Organizations in the Department of Applied Communication Sciences of the UCM. In 2015 she was a member of the ANECA-SETSI Digital Training Offers Innovation Committee. She has participated in various research programs and projects of national (National R + D + I Plan), regional (Community of Madrid), and international nature (through the European Communication Research and Education Association). Among these projects are “Competences and Training in Communication for Employment in the Digital Economy” (2014-2016), “Creation of an Observatory of Teaching Innovation to Promote Studies in Communication in the Knowledge Society” (2011-2013 ); “New positioning in the academic field in the Community of Madrid”. In her scientific outreach activity, she is the author and co-author of numerous books and book chapters and has published articles in prestigious national and international journals.

Prof. Rafael Cabrera Collazo, PhD – Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico)

Rafael L. Cabrera Collazo has a PhD in History from the University of Puerto Rico. He serves as Associate Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico and holds the rank of Professor of History in this same institution. He has been a visiting professor at universities in Cuba, Mexico, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Colombia, where he has given seminars on semiotics and visual culture – these being his areas of expertise and research. He currently participates in several academic research networks related to studies into representations of mass media. He is a member of scientific editorial committees at universities in Spain, Colombia, Argentina a­­nd the Dominican Republic. These integrate national and international professional associations of historians and scholars of social sciences and visual culture – one being the Puerto Rican Association of Historians (of which he was a founding partner and President between 2001 and 2004) and the other, the International Society of Visual Culture, based in Madrid (where he is currently the Scientific Director on its executive committee). He has written one book himself, entitled The drawings of progress: the caricature of Filardi and the criticism of Munocist developmentalism, 1950-1960, and has co-authored three others. He has collaborated with others published in specialised journals and articles in arbitrated books in Mexico and Spain concerning the cultural history of cinema, and the sociability and manipulation of mass media.

Prof. Isabel Rodrigo Martín, PhD – Universidad de Valladolid (Spain)

Doctor in Audiovisual Communication and Advertising with Extraordinary Award from the University of Valladolid in 2012 and Master’s Degree in Communication for Social Purposes: Strategies and Campaigns from the University of Valladolid, where she has recently accessed the position of Full Professor.

He has obtained the research award Young Account of Caja España (2007) and the IV Research Grant of the Institute of Traditional Segovian Culture of the Segovia Provincial Council in 2016.

She is also a researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid in the Chair of Digital Communication in Childhood and Adolescence and in the SocMedia Research Group.

Prof. Luis Rodrigo Martín, PhD – Universidad de Valladolid (Spain)

Degree in Law (2002) and Advertising and Public Relations (2003) from the Complutense University of Madrid. Doctor in Audiovisual Communication and Advertising from the University of Valladolid with Extraordinary Doctorate Award (2010) for the thesis Communication, consumption and culture. The specialized consumptions and their communicative speeches. He teaches at the Faculty of Social, Legal and Communication Sciences of the University of Valladolid since 2003 in the degree in Advertising and Public Relations in different subjects related to the advertising creative process. Throughout his teaching career, he has taught at the Segovia University College and at the C.U. Villanueva, both institutions attached to the Complutense University. He is currently a professor of several official Masters.

He has obtained the Caja España and Caja Segovia research awards for projects related to communication and consumption. He is the author of several books and thirty articles in scientific journals.. He is a researcher at the Complutense Communication and Marketing Extraordinary Chair for childhood and adolescence directed by Professor Patricia Núñez. He was communication director of the Segovia campus of the University of Valladolid between 2006 and 2010.

Title of the presentation, short abstract (max. 300 words), long abstract (for the Book of Proceedings), keywords, the language of the presentation, data of the main author, and data of the co-authors. The scientific committee will review your proposal within 2-3 weeks and notify you by email (please check your SPAM folder).

Once your proposal has been accepted, you must pay for your registration at the conference according to the type of presentation chosen.

Félix Ortega-Mohedano is professor at the University of Salamanca, member of the Audiovisual Content Observatory (ACO), Director of the Master in Audiovisual Communication: Research and Innovation at the University of Salamanca . He has a doctorate in Communication, Culture and Education and a degree in Economics. He has fostered his research in Audience Research, Edu-communication and children’s audiences. Research methodologies, Media structure Economics and cultural industries, Television, Education and Communication, publishing articles and books nationally and internationally.

Kepa Paul Larrañaga – Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain)

Un bienestar digital en construcción: tópicos y no-lugares de la cultura audiovisual en la adolescencia y la juventud

Ethograph. Interested in the analysis of the agency of children and adolescents in the digital environment. He has coordinated the “Guide to the minimum necessary in the regulation of digital communication for children and adolescents” (in editing process) and the “Dictionary of Social Policy and Intervention on Childhood and Adolescence”, in addition to the book “Minors and Internet ”. Author of the guide edited by Thomson Reuters “Attention Moms and Dads.”

He is a member of the editorial board of the Complutense Scientific Journal “Society and Childhood” and member of the advisory board of the “Santander Chair of Children’s Law” (ICADE), and in turn, a researcher for the “Extraordinary Chair of Digital Communication in childhood and adolescence ”(UCM). It implements its lines of research for the advancement and consolidation of children’s rights.

Pilar Lacasa – Universidad de Alcalá (España)

Prácticas, discursos y comunidades digitales entre adolescentes fans

Pilar Lacasa is an Emeritus Professor of Communication at the University of Alcalá, Spain. She loves running, classical movies, and video games. Her research delves into social and cultural approaches to human development to study the identities and activities of fan communities among young people. Pilar explores the relationships between fan communities and cultural industries. She has been a visiting Research Professor in the Comparative Media Studies Program at MIT (USA), at the Digital Ethnography Research Centre, RMIT (Melbourne, Australia), and at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at the Freie Universität, Berlin. She is the author of Learning and Virtual Worlds (Palgrave, 2013) and Adolescent fans (Peter Lang, 2020).
