Information systems and technologies for health and social welfare

We want to bring together professionals, researchers and academics of Information Systems and Technologies of Health and Social Welfare to share their vision and discuss current challenges, developments, case studies, practical and integrated solutions, as well as new products, findings and approaches to take advantage of the use of Information Systems and Technologies in public or private social and health services.

Academics, scientists and Information and Communication Technology professionals in health and social welfare, managers and solution providers around the world will have the opportunity to share experiences, present new ideas, discuss problems and introduce latest developments in the multidisciplinary field of health and social services.

The conference is aimed at academics (teachers, researchers and postgraduate students), professionals and managers in health and social services, general medical and nursing staff, social workers, social educators, psychologists, engineers and researchers in the social and human sciences.

Main goals of the conference:

  • Discuss the importance of Information and Communication Systems for Health and Social Welfare and emerging technological developments.

Dr. Karim Gherab

Prof. Yolanda García Vázquez, PhD
Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain)

Social Worker with a Master in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, a Master in Information Society and a Doctorate in Economic Integration and Regional Development. She studied at the University of Santiago de Compostela, the Open University of Catalonia, the Camilo José Cela University, the University Institute of Dynamic Psychology, the International School of Management in Dortmund, Germany, and the University of California- Berkeley and is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Communication Sciences of the University of Santiago de Compostela. She has participated in numerous competitive research projects at national and European, as well as in the transfer of results leading to the creation of technology-based companies. She is currently studying groups of vulnerable women implementing an automatic mobile communication system for the remote application of cognitive-behavioral therapies of social inclusion. She is also part of the Novos Medios Research Group of the University of Santiago de Compostela and has promoted a network of universities and companies interested in the study of mobile phones as instruments for social inclusion.

Dr. Karim Gherab

Prof. Carlos Ferrás Sexto, PhD.
Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (Spain)

European Doctor and Extraordinary Doctoral Award in Geography and History from the University of Santiago de Compostela (1994). He is currently a professor of Human Geography; he is Vice-President of the Iberian Association of Information Systems and Technologies AISTI and was director of the Master in Information and Knowledge Society and coordinator of the Master in Planning and Management of Territorial Development at the University of Santiago de Compostela. He has been a visiting professor at the University of California-Berkeley, Keele University-United Kingdom and the ISM-International School of Management in Dortmund-Germany. His research focuses on the interaction of Spatial Analysis and Psychotherapy and the technology of communication with information systems. Previously, during the academic year 94-95 he was professor of Planning and Regional Development at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, and between 1991 and 1994 he was a doctoral researcher at the Geography Department of the University College Cork-Ireland. He has been the principal investigator of 5 research projects funded by the Spanish National R + D + i Plan and/or European Union, focused on the analysis of the interaction of ICT with society and territory, within the framework of these projects, it has coordinated the transfer of results from the university to public and private institutions such as the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation, the University of Guadalajara-Mexico or the CEER Foundation, as well as the creation of spin-off companies .

Adrian Aguilera

Prof. Adrian Aguilera, Ph.D – University of California in Berkeley (USA)

Improving the health of vulnerable populations using mobile technology

Adrian Aguilera, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Welfare at UC Berkeley and the Department of Psychiatry at UC San Francisco. He received his B.A, from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from UCLA. Dr. Aguilera’s research is focused on developing and testing technology-based interventions to address health disparities in low-income and vulnerable populations. Dr. Aguilera’s current work has focused on utilizing mobile phone technology to improve mental health interventions in primary care settings. He has developed a text messaging platform to send health related text messages which has been used along with cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) and is currently adding machine learning to improve personalization of mobile phone based health interventions.

Prof. Sara Lumbreras, PhD – Universidad Pontificia Comillas (Spain)

Prof. Sara Lumbreras holds a Ph.D. in industrial engineering as is a professor at the ICAI School of Engineering (Comillas Pontifical University). She is an expert in the development and application of decision-making techniques in complex problems, particularly in the energy and financial sectors, having worked for five years in investment banking in London. She is a member of the Chair of Science, Technology and Religion at the same university, where she studies the social impact of technology. She is the author of more than thirty publications and has worked on more than a dozen projects with both private companies and public institutions. She has conducted research stays at prestigious institutions such as the Santa Fe Institute (USA), the New Mexico Consortium (USA) and the London Business School (United Kingdom). In addition, she is Global Shaper of the World Economic Forum and a Marshall Memorial Fellow.

Álvaro Rocha

Prof. Álvaro Rocha, PhD – Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal)

Maturity Models for Management of Healthcare Information Systems

Álvaro Rocha holds the title of Honorary Professor, DSc in Information Sciences, PhD in Information Systems and Technologies, MSc in Information Management, and BCs in Computer Science. He is Professor of Information Systems at University of Coimbra, a researcher at CISUC (Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra) and a collaborator researcher at LIACC (Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science) and at CINTESIS (Centre for Research in Health Technologies and Information Systems). He is President of AISTI (Iberian Association for Information Systems and Technologies) and Chair of IEEE Portugal Section Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society Chapter. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of JISEM (Journal of Information Systems Engineering & Management) and the Editor-in-Chief of RISTI (Iberian Journal of Information Systems and Technologies). Moreover, he has acted as Vice-Chair of Experts in the Horizon 2020 of the European Commission, as Expert in the Ministry of Education, University and Research of the Italian Government, and as Expert in the Ministry of Finance of the Latvian Government.

Accepted Proposals

If you have an accepted proposal, be sure to register for the conference to be included in the program.

The program will be available for download 2 months before the start of the event.

Young Researchers’ Scholarships

At each conference, we offer a number of Scholarships to Young Researchers. These are awarded to those outstanding students who have an active academic interest in the area of conferences. These collaborators play a critical role in the conference, moderating parallel sessions, providing technical assistance, participating in informal sessions, and presenting their own research papers. The scholarship, and their responsibilities, offer these students a great opportunity to gain professional development at this stage of their academic careers. Meeting experts in the field, interacting with colleagues from other parts of the world, and forming contacts and friendships with other participants. These are the additional benefits of this scholarship.

APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP

Applications will be accepted up to 3 months before the start of the conference.
The list of selected researchers will be published 2 months before the conference date.

Requirements and benefits:

  • Doctoral students are entitled to free registration and are given special recognition during the conference.

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program.
  • Applicants must have a proposal accepted to the conference.
  • It is required basic knowledge of computer technology, data projectors and PowerPoint application.
  • The awarded must be available at the venue the day before the conference (for orientation and training) and throughout the whole event.

  • The scholarship does not cover expenses with transportation, accommodation and food.
